Pregnancy and the months after birth are not the time to guess about workouts. Your body is changing fast, your joints are looser from hormones, your core is doing different work, and the wrong exercises can set you back. Prenatal & Postpartum Pilates gives you smart, safe movement from a team that’s trained for exactly this. You can be on the schedule this week.
Signs You Need Prenatal & Postpartum Pilates
If you’re pregnant and you find yourself wondering if it feels right anymore to do your usual workout routine, then congratulations, you have hit one of those signs. Back pain for the first time during pregnancy, walking hip pain, pelvic heaviness, not knowing what to do safely. There are new rules in play and your prenatal Pilates session should adapt accordingly.
Your body after giving birth gives you different signs, yet still equally common. The fact that your post-delivery tummy continues to protrude suggests you need specialized therapy for the condition called diastasis recti, a splitting of your abs that cannot be corrected by regular crunches. Involuntary leaks when you cough, laugh, or run all point towards issues with your pelvic floor that you should be working on. Low back pain after lugging around your baby, wobbly hips while walking, tired shoulder muscles due to feeding the baby; all those can often be improved with the right postpartum Pilates training.
Ignoring such issues tends to perpetuate the problem. Putting off diastasis treatment can make recovery harder, and the likelihood of diastasis recti may increase with each subsequent pregnancy. Pelvic floor issues that get ignored can persist or get worse over time. Starting now, even at a gentle pace, sets you up for a much stronger return to full fitness.
Our Prenatal & Postpartum Pilates Options
We have two primary options available to you, and your instructor will be able to guide you in the right direction. Prenatal Pilates is for clients who are currently pregnant. This practice begins once you are pregnant and ends at the end of the third trimester. It is designed to keep you strong while accommodating the changes in your posture and helping to prepare you for childbirth. We will modify exercises as needed based on the progression of your pregnancy.
Postpartum Pilates is the next step following delivery. Postpartum clients typically begin their classes around six weeks post-delivery for vaginal delivery or slightly later for c-sections. The initial focus of the practice will include gently re-engaging the deep core and pelvic floor muscles. Once this foundation is built, we can begin the process of strengthening the body by addressing diastasis recti, strengthening the glutes and hips, and alleviating the stress placed on the shoulders and neck due to carrying an infant.
Both prenatal and postpartum clients tend to benefit more from private classes, at least initially. If you are feeling strong, you can join our small group Pilates reformer class with modifications or continue private lessons if that is more convenient for you. Our full programs of Core Restore and Pelvic Floor Wellness will complement Pilates practice.
Book on your Mindbody account or our site. You have to cancel within 24 hours, and inform us about your condition (stage of pregnancy or postpartum).
Prenatal & Postpartum Pilates for Indianapolis Families
Our 46240 location puts us within easy reach of Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville, Meridian Hills, and Broad Ripple, where a lot of expecting and new families live. Indiana winters can also make outdoor walking tough in the third trimester and early postpartum months, so having a warm indoor studio with the right equipment matters more here than in milder climates. We see clients all year, in all stages, and we know how to meet you wherever you are.
What to Expect
When you contact us at 317-475-0993 or schedule via our website, we’ll ask about where you are in your pregnancy or postpartum process, how you’re feeling, and any concerns that you have from your provider. If you are a new client, you should get here 10 minutes early so you can sign a release form and complete our health questionnaire, including all aspects of your pregnancy and delivery experience. It’s important for us to have all of that information in advance.
During your initial consultation, we’ll do an assessment of your breathing, core engagement, and posture so we can plan further classes for you. The intro 3-pack works for prenatal and postpartum sessions if you want a discounted way to start.
Why Choose Us for Prenatal & Postpartum Pilates
Foundations Studio has been serving Indianapolis since October 2020, and our prenatal and postpartum work is led by instructors with real training in this specialty. Our owner’s Pilates certifications and background in physical therapy give her the foundation to work with the medical side of pregnancy and recovery, not just the exercise side.
Class sizes stay small with a 4-person cap for group sessions, so you always have eyes on you. Equipment includes Reformer, Tower, Chair, and Cadillac, which gives us options to modify almost any exercise for any stage. Pricing is upfront, and the owner is in the studio teaching, so you’re not handed off to someone untrained in this area.
